Worldwide Folding Handle Travel
Hair Dryer
Conair’s folding handle travel hair dryer, featuring dual-voltage functionality for global use, was underperforming at retail due to packaging that failed to communicate its core advantage: portability and international usability. Positioned within a standard dryer line-extension, the product lacked clear differentiation at shelf despite its unique travel-focused design.
The objective was to reposition the product as a purpose-built travel essential, emphasizing compact form, folding functionality, and international usability over general beauty messaging and technical specifications.
The design system was built around global travel as a visual and emotional framework. Iconographic elements referenced internationally recognized wayfinding systems, including dotted travel routes, destination markers, and simplified aircraft symbols. A series of illustrated global cityscapes reinforced the product’s worldwide utility, creating an immediate association with movement, travel, and accessibility across borders.
To ground the product in real-life usage, Polaroid-style image frames were introduced to depict the dryer packed within luggage and travel environments, supported by lifestyle imagery of travelers in motion. This combination of graphic systems and contextual photography framed the product as an essential companion for mobility rather than a standard beauty appliance.
The product was rebranded as Worldwide Folding Handle, shifting emphasis toward its defining functional attributes—portability, compact design, and international compatibility—while de-emphasizing technical specifications in favor of clearer
consumer relevance.
The resulting packaging created strong shelf distinction within the hair care category and also enabled secondary merchandising opportunities as a standalone travel-focused item. The product achieved successful placement across major retail channels including Target, Walmart, and Kohl’s.
